New PPP Poll Shows Mitch McConnell Vulnerable in 2020 Kentucky Senate Race
A new Public Policy Polling survey of registered voters in Kentucky finds a Democratic challenger in a statistical tie with Mitch McConnell for Kentucky’s 2020 Senate race – with 45% of the vote for McConnell compared to 42% for his Democratic opponent.
The poll, commissioned by a new grassroots Democratic organization called the Ditch Fund, finds McConnell’s job performance underwater, with just 33% of Kentucky voters approving and 56% disapproving. Combined with just 32% of voters saying Mitch deserves to be reelected and 61% saying it is time for someone new, McConnell is incredibly vulnerable to a Democratic challenger.
“Mitch McConnell should be worried about 2020,” said Ryan Aquilina, the Executive Director of the Ditch Fund and its Ditch Mitch project. “In just a matter of weeks, we have already raised more than $300,000 from 11,000 people to defeat him in 2020. Now, our first poll shows that Mitch McConnell is very vulnerable and absolutely can be beaten… and we are just getting started.”
The results of the new poll show that McConnell’s support in Kentucky has eroded – especially among his Republican base. Among 2016 Trump voters, an astonishing 36% disapprove of McConnell’s job performance and 40% say they think it’s time for someone new.
Even more striking, Kentucky voters who voted for Mitch in 2014 have soured on supporting him for another six years. Among people who voted for McConnell in 2014, 30% disapprove of his job performance and 32% say they think it’s time for someone new.
“Democrats and Republicans are fed up with Mitch McConnell, and the grassroots are fighting back in a way he’s never had to reckon with before,” added Aquilina. “Ready or not, Mitch. We’re coming.”
