Ditch Mitch Fund Releases New Ad Against McConnell: “Is He Looking Out for Kentucky or Somebody Else?”

Ad highlights Mitch McConnell’s long record of taking corporate special interest money, is second in a series of ads using McConnell’s own words to hold him accountable

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Ditch Mitch Fund released the second in a series of Kentucky ads using Senator Mitch McConnell’s own words to hold him accountable.

The ad starts with a Kentucky woman saying, “In Kentucky, we remember Mitch McConnell when he first ran for Senate,” and features a recording from 1984 of McConnell attacking his Democratic opponent in a televised debate: “A majority of my opponent’s funding — both PAC and individual donors — was from outside of Kentucky. Is he looking out for Kentucky or somebody else?”

The woman in the ad then highlights McConnell’s own record: “Today, 77% of Mitch’s campaign money is from outside Kentucky, with over a third from corporate PACs, like insurance and drug companies.” The ad then replays McConnell’s own words: “Is he looking out for Kentucky or somebody else?”

“The only thing propping Mitch McConnell up in Washington is the very thing he decried when he first ran for Senate: out-of-state money and corporate PACs,” said Ryan Aquilina, Executive Director of the Ditch Mitch Fund. “McConnell is supposed to represent Kentucky. Instead he’s become an errand boy for drug companies and corporate special interests, bending over backwards to do their bidding no matter how many everyday Kentuckians it hurts.”

Watch the ad here:

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, over 77% of McConnell’s campaign contributions are from out-of-states. And just since his last re-election, McConnell has taken nearly $3 million from corporate PACs, representing over one-third of his total raised.

Like the first in the series, the ad was produced by Mark Putnam of Putnam Partners, who also produced some of 2018’s most talked-about ads, including Amy McGrath’s viral congressional launch video.

The Ditch Mitch Fund, started in October 2018, is a grassroots-funded organization solely dedicated to holding Mitch McConnell accountable, supporting his future Democratic opponent, and defeating McConnell once and for all in 2020.
